History
Martin E. Harper, considered the founder of this local affiliate,
gave birth to the concept of what is today NAPM-NI. Marty was
a member of PMA of Chicago, but found the cost of dues, and the
distance to drive for meetings restrictive for buyers of Northwest
Indiana. Sometime during the first calendar quarter of 1987, Marty
initiated contacts with both National PMA (Purchasing Management
Association) and John Pressley, C.P.M., Executive Director of
the PMA of Chicago to establish a local affiliate.
Following his inquiries, Marty sent a survey to many of the small
businesses in the Northwest Indiana region proposing a localized
affiliate. Richard L. Small, Director of Purchasing at National
Steel, Midwest Division, is a known respondent who encouraged
a preliminary meeting. Marty invited a few interested parties
to an initial meeting. Tracy Mahan remembered finding Marty alone
in the designated meeting place. Mahan wondered if he had found
the right place.
Nonetheless the concept was born. Invitations to the first formal
meeting were sent, and sometime during May of 1987 the organization
finalized its conception plans. Growing pains lay ahead for the
new affiliate as the few members forged ahead. A sign up at the
first meeting included Martin Harper, Richard Conklin, Dick Small,
John Hickman, Tracy Mahan and Jim Goffiney. By the end of May
that year 13 members were signed up to the new affiliate.
A second meeting was held on Wednesday, June 24, 1987 at Snak's
Park Avenue in Merrillville, Indiana. By this meeting, the affiliate
was concentrating on Lake, Porter and LaPorte Counties in Indiana;
dues were set, bylaws were established and the application for
incorporation was sent to the State of Indiana for a not-for-profit
organization. PMA criteria included a minimum of forty-five dues
paying members from the purchasing profession. The name was incorporated
as Purchasing Management Association of Northwest Indiana. In
August 1987 the first bank account was established at Gainer Bank
in Hobart, Indiana.
In September, 1988 the name of the affiliate was changed to National
Association of Purchasing Management- Northwest Indiana. That
change was made to reflect changes in the National Association
from PMA to National Association of Purchasing Management (NAPM).
In 2001 the national again changed its name by popular vote to
the Institute for Supply Management (ISM). No action has been
taken to change the affiliate name to this date.
Each year the affiliate continues to grow with a present membership
in the seventies, still concentrating of Lake, Porter and LaPorte
Counties in Indiana for its membership. Members represent a great
diversity of businesses within this region.
