History. Just a few short years ago the NAPM-NI board made a decision to start a scholarship program with our local universities to help "advertise" our association and bring awareness to the Supply Management profession. Part of our organizations "purpose" as defined in the NAPM-NI By-Laws is, "To establish and operate a scholarship program for the benefit of qualified students interested in the study of purchasing management and materials management and all subjects related thereto."

Over the years we have presented scholarships to students from Valparaiso University, Purdue University North Central, and Purdue University Calumet. One of our scholarship winners had this to say:

"As one of the 2002 NAPM-NI Scholarship recipients, I have benefited enormously from this award and from the association with this professional organization. College students always welcome scholarships, but I do truly value all that I have learned this past year. My knowledge of the purchasing industry was previously quite limited but I have become more aware of the various facets of this industry. I've made an attempt to help connect the NAPM-NI to Valparaiso University business students in order to increase awareness and interest in this field. In sum, NAPM-NI has so much to offer students, and I am grateful for the opportunity to associate with and learn from your professional organization."

This recipient was responsible for organizing a panel discussion during 2002 with the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity at Valparaiso University, inviting a panel of NAPM-NI members to present on the purchasing function and profession. This type of partnership gives students a better awareness of what purchasing does and how we can affect the bottom line in business. It shows our value to business, and future business leaders.

Golf Outing. Our scholarship program has been funded with the generous support of our annual golf outing. This event is normally held in September and brings together suppliers and buyers from all over Northwest Indiana for a day or relaxation and enjoyment to support this educational cause. We welcome hole sponsors as well as raffle items to be awarded that day.
